Newell’s Old Boys continue to escape relegation. Two weeks ago, they beat Patronato 3-1 away from home in a six-pointer to open a five-point gap above them in the respective table. La Lepra made it six matches without defeat in the Superliga, winning three and drawing three, and they also reached 18 points (three behind leaders) with one game in hand. Newell’s hold the best home record in the league, with 13 points from 15 on offer.
Gimnasia LP depend on a miracle to retain their top-flight status. Having lost to Union Santa Fe 1-0 at home in their last league game, El Lobo are 11 points behind Patronato and Rosario Central, who would decide the final drop spot in a playoff. They collected only four points from 30 available, having suffered eight defeats in ten weeks.
Newell’s is definitely an improved team but they need to keep getting points to escape from relegation, while Maradona’s Gimnasia is nothing but a mess and they will play next season in 2nd division almost for sure so I can’t see anything but a home win here.
