Independiente’s three-match unbeaten run of two victories and one draw in the Superliga has been stopped last time out, when they suffered a deserved 2-0 defeat away at Velez Sarsfield. The team are languishing in the mid-table spots on 13 points (with one league game in hand).
Argentinos Juniors climbed into second spot of the Superliga table on 18 points (three behind leaders Boca Juniors) thanks to their 2-1 home success over Sarandi Arsenal in spite of having trailed 1-0 at one point. As a result of this remarkable campaign, the team opened a healthy ten-point gap over the bottom three in the relegation table. However, El Bicho have been irregular on the road, registering one victory, two draws and one defeat. Argentinos Juniors centre back Miguel Torren has served his one-game ban and will return.
After Boca’s defeat on Friday, Argentinos Jrs can now reach them at the top if they beat Independiente, and while I don’t expect them to take big risks and go for the 3 points, they should have enough to get at least a draw.
