Russia’s Image Dependent on the Success of World Cup

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed that the success of FIFA World Cup 2018 will bring a positive image to Russia.

This summer, Russia will host the World Cup tournament, and Putin said that a safe tournament will be vital in getting a positive impression for the country. He stated concerns as violent Russian fans from Euro 2016 were brought up during the preparations.

Putin said as he spoke to the police, “[Russia] must hold it at the highest level and most importantly, ensure maximum security for players and fans.” “Of course you play a crucial role in achieving this aim,” the Russian president added.

During his speech, he also emphasized that the he believes the police will act appropriately in accordance with the law at any given situation. How the event will run smoothly and how it will affect Russia’s image worldwide will directly depend on police operations.

FIFA, the “international governing body” of football, futsal, and beach soccer associations, said that despite the violence from Spartak Moscow fans in Spain, they still have complete trust in Russia to ensure safe and secured sportsmanship in the upcoming World Cup.

In the past, Russian fans have been involved in disastrous football-related circumstances. In June 2016, Russian gangsters caused riot in Marseille during the Euro 2016 tournament. Russia tracked down these gangs who are suspected to attend the matches.

From June 14 to July 15, Russia will host the matches in 11 cities. This will be their first time hosting the World Cup.
