Copa Libertadores Round of 16 – Estudiantes (Argentina) vs Gremio (Brazil)
Estudiantes needed to beat Nacional at least by two goals and they managed a 3-1 victory to reach this round-of-16 in May. The side will start the league season next Sunday at Godoy Cruz, after finishing the last term in 16th. The aforementioned success against Nacional stopped a five-game losing streak at home, but Estudiantes will play as hosts at Quilmes until next year.
Copa Libertadores’ defending champions Gremio didn’t find any difficulties to go through the group stage and they finished first-placed with 14 points after a 1-0 home victory over Defensor Sporting from Uruguay. Last Saturday, they beat Flamengo (which were leaders before the matchday) 2-0 at home to reach 30 points, five behind current table toppers Sao Paulo. Gremio is on four games without defeat in all competitions, having won two of them.
Estudiantes won’t have their captain defensive midfielder Rodrigo Braña due to suspension and during the offseason, they haven’t got any stronger than they were before. Gremio will miss one of their best players, winger Everton, but I still think they are the better side here. Away win.
