Copa Libertadores: Racing (Argentina) vs River (Argentina)
Racing Club lost at Cruzeiro from Brazil 2-1 in May in their last official game, which prevented them from staying at the top of their group, but they still advanced to this round. That result also means Racing are on three consecutive defeats in all competitions, including a disappointing loss to third-tier side Sarmiento Resistencia 1-0 in the Copa Argentina. Racing ended up in seventh in the last league campaign. La Academia claimed eight victories in their last ten home games, but one of their two losses was to River Plate.
River Plate secured the first spot of their group following a 0-0 home draw with Flamengo three months ago. The team are now experiencing an impressive run of 19 competitive games without defeat, having climbed into eighth in the last league table and reached the Copa Argentina’s round-of-16 by beating fourth-tier side Central Norte 7-0 and B Nacional outfit Villa Dalmine 3-1 during July. River hasn’t lost any of their last eight on away turf, with six victories in that spell.
Racing Club legend Gustavo Bou, who led the team to the title in 2014, has returned to the club but they have to deal with three big departures: striker Lautaro Martinez and goalkeeper Juan Musso have travelled to Italy to join Internazionale and Udinese respectively while midfielder Diego Gonzalez was signed by Tijuana from Mexico. I’ll back an away win: River is confident on their travels and seem a bit stronger than Racing at the moment.
