River vs Newell’s
River Plate extended their unbeaten run in the Superliga to six matches (four victories and two draws) last weekend, when beating San Martin Tucuman 2-1 at home. That victory allowed El Millonario to leapfrog Huracan and climb into the fifth spot on 33 points, only three behind the last Copa Libertadores berth occupied by Atletico Tucuman. It was also their second consecutive success at Estadio Monumental, having beaten league leaders Racing Club 2-0 three weeks ago.
Newell’s Old Boys remain unbeaten after seven matches under boss Hector Bidoglio, having won three and drawn four. Last weekend, they celebrated an easy 3-0 home win over relegation candidates San Martin SJ. The team are improving since the new coach’s arrival and they are now on 25 points in 15th. However, La Lepra experienced trouble on the road this term, registering a single success, three draws and six defeats.
Some missings for River including their best player Juan Fernando Quintero, left back Milton Casco and midfielder Exequiel Palacios, plus they debut in Copa Libertadores midweek so their minds might not be 100% in this game. The handicap is too big considering Newell’s has improved and is undefeated in the last 7 games.
