Gianni Infantino, FIFA president, proposed a new football tournament which he calls “Final 8”, that will feature eight international teams every two years.

FIFA aims to reform its international football presence with the help of the mini World Cup tournament penned as Final 8. This would be the culmination of the Nations League competition.

According to Reuters, Infantino said that an unidentified group of investors proposed a budget of $25 billion for the rights of Final 8. The said tournament will be held every October and/or November of every odd year, beginning from 2021.

With the Final 8 finding its place, the Confederations Cup being held a year before the World Cup will be abolished. Infantino had submitted the plan, but the FIFA’s decision-making board must approve the tournament first.

Both UEFA and CONCACAF (for North America, Central America, and the Caribbean) have already set up their own Nations League.

For both continental cup competitions, the national teams are distributed into divisions based on their rankings. In between these divisions, teams are promoted and relegated (demoted).

Nothing has been set about this new international tournament, but it’s something FIFA will work on to keep the football game aflame.
