Sarmiento vs Boca Juniors
Javier Toledo’s goal in the 95th minute allowed Sarmiento to secure an important point on their visit to Barracas Central last Saturday, drawing 1-1. Thanks to that result, El Verde made it five league games unbeaten (two victories and three stalemates) and 31 points in 24 rounds in the Liga Profesional. Following this campaign, Israel Damonte’s men have finally clinched their top-flight status for next season.
Boca Juniors seem unbeatable at the moment. After their abandoned game at Gimnasia LP on Thursday, the team managed to beat Aldosivi 2-1 at home thanks to goals from Martin Payero and Dario Benedetto last Sunday. That success means El Xeneize are on 12 league games unbeaten (nine victories and three stalemates in that span). Hugo Ibarra’s men accumulated 45 points in 23 games (one in hand) and returned to the top of the league table. In addition, Boca grabbed 13 points from the last 15 available on away turf.
Boca is of course the main candidate to win the championship after such a great run they’ve been going through lately, but this doesn’t show on their performances. All of their victories are very tight, the last 11 by only 1 goal, and this run will have to end at some point. Even though Sarmiento is not the most reliable team they will be motivated to play against the leader and could be able to hold to at least a draw.
