Russia isn’t a very popular destination to fulfil that bucket list if you compare it to France, Italy, Thailand, or Japan. However, the 2018 World Cup in Russia will bring in many fans from all over the globe to watch their team play in this most celebrated international football tournament.
You might be wondering, as a fan and tourist, how much money you need in order to survive in Russia for five to six days (at least). If you’re one of those looking forward to this (probably) once in a lifetime experience, you should know that there are two options for you.

First, participate in an arranged tour package and the travel agency will do everything for you. In this option, you’ll have a grasp on the entire budget without having to worry about anything.
Let’s say you’ll be in Russia for 5 nights. You will watch the match in Moscow. All through 5 nights, you will stay at a 3-star hotel. Since many fans will come from all over the world, let’s assume a starting base or layover location at Doha, Qatar. In addition, we will look at prices 1-2 months before the start of FIFA World Cup, instead of possible cheaper rates which can be attained 6 months before. The cheapest ticket price is at RUB 6,300 or approximately USD 101 (for group-stage matches) and the most expensive one at RUB 66,000 or approximately USD 1,059 (for the final match).
Take note that the time of writing is still two months away from the opening match, meaning prices might still increase. Furthermore, foreign exchange rates between the Russian Ruble and US Dollar might also affect the computation.
Let us check the 2018 Russia World Cup Package from Qatar Airways. This includes:
• Roundtrip tickets from Doha to Moscow
• Hotel accommodation
• Daily breakfast
• Travel documents and Russia welcome kit
• All taxes and service charges
• Official match ticket (subject to availability)
It doesn’t say how many World Cup tickets are included in the package (we assume only 1) and how many days are included, but for Moscow Group & Round 16 packages, the price starts from USD 3,145. As of writing, Qatar Airways has already disabled their form for the packages.
Since only one meal is included, you will have to take two meals at inexpensive or mid-range restaurants. Here’s a run through of the expenses for five days.

Second, you can prepare a do-it-yourself option without going through the package. Would it cost you more or less? Let’s check.

The first option will cost you USD 3,584.50, while the DIY style will leave you with USD 2,857.66. The approximate difference between a package tour and a personalized option is USD 726.84. Of course, the rates here are only approximates and basic expenses. This does not include visa processing (if needed) or other tours in Moscow. The results may vary, so always bring at least a buffer budget of about USD 700-1,000, in case you want to do some sightseeing or further shopping.
