Estudiantes’ main goal this season should be to stay safe from potential relegation threats as the team, who have been in the top flight for the last 24 years, are only nine points away from the drop spots at the moment. The last term, they ended up in 17th and made it to the round-of-16 in the Superliga Cup (losing to Racing Club). However, they won one and drew two of their last three games in those competitions. Last weekend, Estudiantes beat second-tier club Mitre 2-0 in the Copa Argentina’s round-of-32.
Aldosivi hasn’t found trouble to avoid relegation on their return to the Superliga as they produced a remarkable campaign, earning 33 points, and were even close to qualifying for the Copa Sudamericana 2020. The team have not won any of their last three competitive matches (one draw and two defeats) which resulted in their early goodbye to the league cup (losing to River Plate 7-1 on aggregate). El Tiburon claimed a single away win in 2019, along with two draws and three losses.
Aldosivi lost 21 players this winter, including star players Cristian Chavez (sold to Independiente) and Matias Pisano (America Cali in Colombia). They added 12 new players, but one of the best ones, Roman Martinez, is still not available.
Huge rebuilding moment for Aldosivi, too many players gone, too many new ones, and this should be something Estudiantes should take advantage of.
