Newell’s vs Independiente
Newell’s Old Boys had a terrible debut in the league season last Friday. It was a 2-0 away defeat to Velez Sarsfield, having conceded in the second minute of the game. It could have been a heavier rout. La Lepra made it nine away games without a win (earning a single point) and four defeats in their last five league fixtures, just beating Defensa y Justicia. At home, they claimed four wins in the last five, but the only loss was to Independiente, 1-0 in April.
Independiente failed to qualify for the Copa Libertadores 2019 after ending up in the sixth spot last term. However, El Rojo is on four competitive matches unbeaten (three victories, one draw). They won against fifth-tier side Central Ballester 8-0 in the Copa Argentina’s first round a month ago and also lifted the Suruga Bank Cup title by beating Japanese side Cerezo Osaka 1-0 away last week (that game made them postpone the season opener against San Martin Tucuman at home). Independiente registered the best away record in the last league season, with seven wins, four draws and just two defeats.
I think Independiente are strong at the moment and they are especially confident in their travels. I’ll back an away win.
