River Plate managed to climb into the last Copa Libertadores spot on 39 points after leapfrogging Atletico Tucuman by beating them 1-0 away. Thanks to a goal from Cristian Ferreira in the first half, El Millonario made it three straight league victories and eight games unbeaten in this competition (winning six and drawing two). River also has won the last three Superliga matches at their own stadium. They were involved in Copa Libertadores action in midweek, registering a 0-0 draw at home against Palestino from Chile.
Meanwhile, Independiente returned to a Copa Sudamericana berth thanks to a highly-celebrated 2-0 home victory over Aldosivi, which put an end to the team’s three-game winless streak of one draw and two defeats in the Superliga. El Rojo is now sitting in eight on 32 points. On away turf, Ariel Holan’s men failed to win in the last five league games, drawing three and losing two since beating Argentinos Juniors in early November.
Despite the midweek scoreless draw River Plate are going through an excellent moment and this derby is one they usually win, especially at home.
