Libertad (Paraguay) – River (Argentina)

Libertad played enjoyable football in their last Copa LIbertadores’ game, claiming an easy 3-0 home victory over Venezuelan side Deportivo Tachira. As a result, El Gumarelo took their first three points in group H, climbing into second spot as they lead third-placed Nacional by goal difference. Ariel Galeano’s men won 2-0 at home over Sportivo Trinidense last Saturday to remain as Torneo Apertura leaders, accumulating 32 points in 14 matches (six over Cerro Porteno in second). Libertad are unbeaten in their last five games in all competitions (four wins and one draw) and remain without defeat in the last eight as the hosting side, winning six and drawing two.

Meanwhile, River Plate are still perfect in the 2024 Copa Libertadores after their convincing 2-0 home success over Nacional from Uruguay, with Claudio Echeverri and Facundo Colidio scoring. El Millonario are leaders in group H on six points, holding a three-point advantage so far. On a sorry note, Martin Demichelis’ men succumbed to a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat to arch-rivals Boca Juniors on a neutral ground and were knocked out of the Copa Liga Profesional in the quarter-finals. That result stopped a four-match winning streak (two of those on away turf).

River showed some defensive issues in the 2-3 defeat in the Superclasico last weekend and they need to recover as soon as possible because their fans are losing patience. Losing could be a big problem for Libertad considering they would only have one home game left in the last 3 rounds, so they should go for the 3 points. I expect to see an open game here, River is a very solid attacking team but showing some signs of problems in defense so both should be able to score.
