River vs Gimnasia
River Plate secured a dramatic place in the quarterfinals of the Torneo Apertura on Sunday night, defeating San Lorenzo on penalties after a thrilling 2-2 draw at home. The decisive moment came deep into stoppage time of the second half of extra time, when Juan Quintero found the equalizer to rescue El Millonario from elimination. The side coached by Eduardo Coudet continue to show signs of inconsistency in league play, however. River have won only one of their last four matches in regular time in this competition (one draw and two defeats), and notably all four of those games were played at the Estadio Monumental.
Gimnasia LP continue their unstoppable run of form. On Sunday night, the team surprised everyone by defeating Vélez Sarsfield 1-0 on the road, knocking out one of the strongest sides from the regular season thanks to a first-half penalty converted by Marcelo Torres. El Lobo also had to play with ten men from the 55th minute onward, making the victory even more impressive. As a result, Gimnasia extended their winning streak in the Torneo Apertura to five consecutive matches and continued their remarkable late-season surge. Their away form has also been excellent, with five victories in the last seven matches as the visiting side (one draw and one defeat).
River were extremely lucky to advance, scoring a goal in the 122nd minute of the game and then avoiding two match points in the penalties shootout, despite playing against 10 men for almost the whole game. Gimnasia are on a huge winning streak, full of confidence and this handicap looks too big to skip.
