Union – Newell’s
Union Santa Fe took a little breather in a difficult moment last Monday, when they managed a massive 3-2 away win at Gimnasia LP thanks to a strike from Joaquin Mosqueira in the sixth minute of stoppage time. El Tatengue put an end to a three-match losing streak in league action to accumulate 30 points in the Liga Profesional, holding onto their Copa Sudamericana berth in the aggregate table. On a sorry note, Union lost their last two at home without even scoring. Coach Cristian Gonzalez has a complete squad to choose from on Friday.
Newell’s Old Boys continue playing below the fans’ expectations. Last Saturday, they showed a poor version and ended up drawing 1-1 against relegation candidates Sarmiento at home. Even though La Lepra succumbed to a single defeat across their last five league games (winning two and drawing two), they accumulated just 21 points in the Liga Profesional, which keeps them out of the fight for a Copa Sudamericana ticket via the aggregate table. To make matters worse, Newell’s are winless in their last six on the road, with three stalemates and three defeats since beating Barracas Central at Huracan 1-0 in July.
Newell’s are just terrible, they have barely anything to play for in these last rounds and I expect them to be in trouble against Union who showed signs of life in their last minute win last week.
