Fluminense (Brazil) – Atletico Mineiro (Brazil)
Fluminense FC won on penalties after a hard-fought 2-1 home success over Gremio FBPA in the return leg of the round of 16 to continue seeking their second consecutive Copa Libertadores’ title. However, their reality is not so good when it comes to the league. Last Sunday, Mano Menezes’ men lost 2-1 away at Juventude EC, dropping down to the 16th spot of the Brasileirao table on 27 points, just two above the relegation zone. That result also stopped their four-match unbeaten streak of three victories and one draw in all competitions. In fact, Fluminense are without defeat in their last seven as hosts, winning four and drawing three.
Meanwhile, Atletico Mineiro had to fight more than expected before reaching the quarter-finals: they secured a massive 1-0 home success over San Lorenzo to make it 2-1 on aggregate. On Sunday, O Galo lost 3-0 away at EC Bahia, which places them in tenth spot of the league table on 33 points in 24 games. That defeat also broke their three-game unbeaten run of two victories and one draw and another streak of four without defeat on the road (winning two and drawing two in that spell).
Neither is going through a good season in the Brasileirao as they are both focused in this tournament. Mineiro was very lucky to advance despite playing against a weaker team like San Lorenzo, Fluminense are more experienced in this situations and these odds look too high to pass.
