Lanus (Argentina) – Independiente Medellin (Colombia)
Lanus found it easy to beat LDU Quito 3-1 at home in the return leg of the Copa Sudamericana round of 16, making it 5-2 on aggregate to continue seeking their second title. On Friday, El Granate had to settle for a 1-1 home stalemate against Union Santa Fe to make it 19 points in the Liga Profesional, a campaign that places them into the Sudamericana spots for next season. In fact, Ricardo Zielinski’s men are now on six competitive matches unbeaten, winning two and drawing four. At home, Lanus haven’t lost any of the last seven, with four victories and three draws since losing to Cuiaba EC 1-0 in May.
Independiente Medellin didn’t face trouble to reach the quarter-finals either: they claimed an easy 4-0 home success over CD Palestino at Estadio Hernan Ramirez Pereira to make it 6-2 on aggregate. Last Sunday, El Poderoso drew 1-1 away at Aguilas Doradas to make it eight points in as many matches in the Colombian Torneo Finalizacion. The side lost only one of their last six in all competitions (winning two and drawing three), but they also hold a seven-game winless streak as the visiting side, with five stalemates and two losses in that spell.
Lanus has been irregular so far in the argentinean league but it’s been a different story for them in Sudamericana. They will have veteran attacking midfielder Eduardo Salvio back from injury and it should make a difference for them. The colombian team won only 1 of 8 games in their local league with just 6 goals scored and I expect them to struggle here due to their lack of international competitions experience.
