San Lorenzo (Argentina) vs Nacional (Uruguay)

Last Wednesday, San Lorenzo had a terrible performance on their visit to Deportes Temuco and ended up losing 1-0. Even though they had also lost 2-1 at home in the first leg, El Ciclon were awarded a 3-0 win as the Chilean side used a player who had already been registered by Defensa y Justicia in previous stages. Last Sunday, San Lorenzo drew 2-2 with Lanus at home despite holding a two-goal lead at one point. That means they are on two points in as many weeks of league action. That home defeat to Temuco in regular time was their only loss in the last five at Pedro Bidegain Stadium, having claimed three wins and a draw.

Nacional is experiencing an impressive unbeaten run. A week ago, they managed to beat Sol de America from Paraguay 1-0 at home (with Matias Zunino netting the winner in the first half) to reach this Copa Sudamericana’s round-of-16 after a scoreless away draw in the first leg. In the league, they won 1-0 over Progreso at home, playing with an alternative XI. That means El Bolso remain perfect on 15 points in five weeks, two above arch-rivals Penarol. Nacional is on 12 competitive matches without defeat, having won 11 of them. Their last defeat dates back to May when they lost at Estudiantes 3-1 in the Copa Libertadores (in the team’s last trip to Argentina). Since then, they claimed five wins and one draw on the road.

San Lorenzo league games have been quite overish, both 2-2 draws, as their defense has been very weak lately but they are still managing to score through their top scorer Nicolas Blandi and some attacking midfielders that make a difference for them.

Even though it’s the 1st leg and teams tend to be more careful, San Lorenzo is far from being defensively reliable and I like the low goals line here.
