Gremio (Brazil) vs River Plate (Argentina)
Defending champions Gremio took a big step towards the Copa Libertadores’ finals last Tuesday when beating River Plate 1-0 away, with Michel netting the winner in the 62nd minute. That success also ended a three-game winless streak. O Tricolor will go forward in the competition if they manage to avoid the defeat at home. Last Saturday, Renato Portaluppi rotated his players and Gremio lost to Sport Recife 4-3 at their own stadium, but they remain sitting in fifth on 52 points. That defeat broke a 13-game unbeaten run at Arena do Gremio, during which they booked ten victories and three draws.
Meanwhile, River Plate has a mountain to climb following that 1-0 home defeat last week, when Marcelo Galardo’s men produced a sorry performance. Therefore, the team will need to beat Gremio away to keep their hope alive. On Saturday, River won 1-0 at home over Aldosivi to stop a two-game losing run in all competitions. That victory also allowed them to climb into the fifth spot of the league table on 16 points (seven behind leaders Racing Club) with a game in hand. They succumbed to a 1-0 defeat in their last away game at Colon, which ended a 14-match unbeaten run on the road (eight wins, six draws).
No choice for River but to win what means that sooner or later this will be an open game and I have to go with the very short goals line.
