Velez (Argentina) vs Lanus (Argentina)
Velez Sarsfield are back in a continental semi-final tie after beating Universidad Catolica 3-1 away and 4-3 on aggregate, with Juan Martin Lucero netting the winner in the 94th minute. Last Sunday, coach Mauricio Pellegrino fielded an alternative XI, but the team were able to beat Newell’s Old Boys 1-0 away. Following that result, El Fortin are sharing the top of the Fase Complementacion’s group B with their last opponents on nine points. They won four and lost one of their last five matches in all competitions. On a sorry note, Velez lost three of the last four at home, just beating Racing Club in that time.
Lanus produced a remarkable performance to beat Independiente 3-1 away after a scoreless home draw in the first leg and continue seeking their second Copa Sudamericana title. Last Sunday, they drew 1-1 at Patronato with an alternative starting line-up and ran out of chances to qualify for the Fase Complementacion’s final as they took five points in four rounds in the Argentine league losers stage. El Granate are winless in their last three games, drawing two and losing one. On away turf, they registered two successes, one draw and one defeat in the last four in all competitions.
This should be an interesting semifinal between two teams with a solid and experienced attack, so I can definitely see at least a couple of goals here.
