Vasco da Gama (Brazil) – Barracas Central (Argentina)
CR Vasco da Gama were unable to hold onto their early lead and suffered a tough 3–1 defeat away to Olimpia last week. Even so, they remain second in Copa Sudamericana Group G with seven points and, if they win on Wednesday, will secure at least that position and advance to the playoff round. They could even win the group — and qualify directly for the round of 16 — thanks to the head-to-head tiebreaker if Olimpia also lose at home to Audax Italiano by one or two goals. On Sunday, Renato Portaluppi’s side were beaten 3–0 at home by Red Bull Bragantino and dropped to 16th place in the Brasileirao standings with 20 points from 17 matches, only two above the relegation zone.
Barracas Central will not be able to continue their run in their first-ever international campaign. They were eliminated from Copa Sudamericana contention after a 2–0 away defeat to Audax Italiano left them bottom of Group G with three points, four behind their closest rivals with only one match remaining. With no more league action left, El Guapo have now gone seven matches without a win across all competitions (four draws and three defeats). Three of those matches were away from home, where they recorded two draws and one loss.
Vasco are not in great form but they must win to advance here and playing against this already eliminated Barracas should be a good opportunity to get the easy win they need.
