Corinthians (Brazil) – Estudiantes (Argentina)
SC Corinthians advanced to the Copa Sudamericana quarter-finals after securing a scoreless away draw at Newell’s Old Boys (winning 2-1 on aggregate). On Saturday, O Timao drew 1-1 away at Cruzeiro EC. They remain out of the Copa Sudamericana spots in the Brazilian league table, occupying 13th spot on 24 points so far. Vanderlei Luxemburgo’s men lost only one of their last 13 competitive matches, winning eight and drawing four in that time. At home, Corinthians are on six victories in a row since losing to Red Bull Bragantino 1-0 in early July.
Estudiantes haven’t found any difficulties to beat Goias EC 2-0 away in Brazil in the return leg and 5-0 on aggregate in the round-of-16. Last Thursday, El Pincha succumbed to a 2-1 away defeat at Belgrano in their Copa Liga Profesional opener, failing to climb into the Copa Libertadores’ zone in the aggregate table. That defeat also put an end to their six-game winning streak in all competitions. Two of those games took place on away turf (at Argentinos Juniors and Goias EC).
Estudiantes is a good solid team and I expect them to be able to hold this irregular Corinthians.
