Corinthians (Brazil) – Argentinos Jrs (Argentina)
SC Corinthians secured an easy 2-0 away success at Paraguay’s Nacional Asuncion in round three thanks to goals from Yuri Alberto and Matheuzinho. Through that victory, O Timao climbed into second spot in the group F table on seven points, one behind leaders Racing (Uruguay). On Saturday, Antonio Oliveira’s men lost 2-0 away at CR Flamengo, which means they are sitting in 16th spot of the Brasileirao spot on five points after six matches. That loss also stopped a four-match unbeaten streak of three victories and one draw. At home, Corinthians haven’t lost any of the last five, winning three and drawing two.
Meanwhile, Argentinos Juniors took a step back in their fight to go through the group stage following their surprising 2-1 away defeat to Racing (Uruguay). That loss dropped them down from first to third spot in group F on six points, one behind second-placed SC Corinthians. On Friday, El Bicho opened up their Liga Profesional campaign with a convincing 3-2 home success over Rosario Central, holding onto their spot in the 2025 Copa Libertadores. Pablo Guede’s men lost only one of their last six competitive games, winning two and drawing three in regular time. On away turf, Argentinos had been unbeaten in three (two wins and one draw) until the aforementioned defeat in Uruguay.
Argentinos needs to win here or at least avoid a defeat and then win in the last game to have a chance of going to the next round. They’ve been irregular in this competition but they are still a good team and I expect them to avoid a defeat that would eliminate them against this brazilian team that has been disappointing in their local league and won’t have Pedro Henrique and Fausto Vera among others.
