Talleres vs Universidad Catolica
Talleres will make their third appearance in the Copa Libertadores thanks to an historic campaign in the 2021 Argentine league season, finishing in third place in the aggregate table. Last Friday, coach Pedro Caixinha made his debut at the club with a 2-1 away defeat at Gimnasia LP. That loss stopped a two-game winning streak under interim boss Javier Gandolfi. Speaking of the league, the team accumulated only five points in eight games, producing a poor performance so far. Talleres won their last home match (2-1 over Godoy Cruz) to stop a four-game winless streak of one draw and three losses at Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes.
Meanwhile, Universidad Catolica (Libertadores’ runners up in 1993) have lifted their fourth consecutive league title in 2021. Last Saturday, they also managed to beat arch-rivals Universidad de Chile 2-1 at home to stop a four-match losing streak. Los Cruzados accumulated 12 points in eight rounds in the league so far, trailing leaders Colo Colo by five. On away turf, Cristian Paulucci’s men are on three consecutive defeats since beating Coquimbo Unido 3-2 in February.
Talleres is in a terrible moment and I don’t see how they can be better if they will still miss key attacking players like Valoyes and Michael Santos.
