River Plate (Argentina) – Argentinos Jrs (Argentina)
River Plate dropped down to second spot in group D (on nine points) as a result of a 3-1 home defeat to Brazilian outfit Fluminense on May 25. That result broke their five-game unbeaten streak of two wins and three draws (including the 1-1 away stalemate at Boca Juniors, when they lost on penalties in the Copa Liga Profesional’s quarter-finals) and also a three-match winning run at Estadio Monumental (Marcelo Gallardo’s men beat Colombian sides Junior and Independiente Santa Fe in the Copa Libertadores and Aldosivi in domestic action).
Meanwhile, Argentinos Juniors overcame the group stage in the Copa Libertadores for the first time since reaching the semi-finals in 1986. The team lost 2-0 at Nacional in Uruguay in the last matchweek, but had enough to win group F with 12 points. El Bicho have shown great improvements under boss Gabriel Milito, losing only two of their last 13 competitive matches (seven victories and four draws). In fact, the aforementioned defeat at Nacional broke a five-match unbeaten run of three successes and two stalemates away from their own stadium.
River should be able to beat this Argentinos team that has been strong so far but doesn’t have experience at this stage.
