Olimpia qualified for the Copa Libertadores’ round-of-16 in a heroic way: the team needed to open a four-goal margin over Deportivo Tachira at home and they claimed a 6-2 win to climb into second spot in the group B table on nine points. Four days later, they closed their campaign in the Paraguayan Torneo Apertura by beating River Plate 2-1 away to end up in second spot, five points behind champions Libertad. Overall, El Decano are on three victories in a row. At home, they won five and drew two of the last eight, but their only defeat in that time was to Internacional, 1-0 in May.

Internacional, who had already clinched their ticket to the round-of-16, secured the first spot in group B through a 0-0 home draw against Bolivian side Always Ready in matchweek six.
