LDU Quito vs Velez Sarsfield
LDU Quito earned an important point on their visit to Union La Calera last Wednesday, when striker Billy Arce netted the equaliser to make it 2-2 in the 83rd minute. Ecuadorian league’s matchday 10, which was expected to take place last weekend, was postponed due to Covid related restrictions in the country. Liga are fifth placed on 15 points, five behind leaders Emelec. The team have been unbeaten in their last 12 competitive matches, winning three and drawing nine in regular time. Six of those games were at home, with LDU Quito managing three successes and three draws.
Velez Sarsfield opened up their Copa Libertadores campaign with a 3-2 home defeat to Flamengo in a thrilling game last Tuesday, so they are occupying the bottom spot in group G. On Sunday, coach Mauricio Pellegrino fielded an alternative XI, which managed to beat Lanus 2-1 away. That victory means El Fortin are the first team to secure a ticket to the league playoffs as the team are leaders in group B on 25 points, six above second-placed Boca Juniors. Overall, Velez won two, drew one (in regular time) and lost two of their last five competitive matches. On away turf, they lost only one of the last six, winning four and drawing one.
LDU is historically a very solid home team helped by the altitud factor of Quito and even though I rate Velez overall as a better team this should be a home win.
