Independiente Rivadavia (Argentina) – Fluminense (Brazil)
Independiente Rivadavia continue to enjoy a historic season. Last Thursday, they produced a brilliant performance and thrashed Deportivo La Guaira 4–1 at home at Estadio Malvinas Argentinas, reaching nine points in Group C and all but securing their place in the round of 16 in their first-ever Copa Libertadores appearance. On Saturday, head coach Alfredo Berti fielded a completely rotated XI that earned a 1–1 draw away to Aldosivi, closing the Argentine Torneo Apertura regular season as the best team in the league with 34 points from 16 matches. La Lepra are on a ten-match unbeaten run across all competitions (eight wins and two draws) and have won five consecutive home matches.
Fluminense took a major step backward in their last Copa Libertadores match, delivering a very poor performance in a 2–0 away defeat to Club Bolívar. As a result, O Tricolor sit bottom of Group C with just one point, seriously compromising their chances of reaching the round of 16. On Sunday, they also lost 2–0 away to SC Internacional, suffering their second consecutive defeat across all competitions, and remain third in the Brasileirao with 26 points from 14 matches. In total, Fluminense are on a three-match winless run as visitors (one draw and two defeats).
This could be Fluminense’s last chance to avoid a humiliating participation in Libertadores because they have only 1 point after 3 matches. Independiente Rivadavia are going through a historic season in both the league and in their first ever participation in an international tournament, they are playing great and they will take advantage of any risks that the visitors take to go for the 3 points, so I like the chance of seeing an open game with some goals.
