Estudiantes (Argentina) – Everton (Chile)
Matias Pellegrini’s goal in the 79th minute allowed Estudiantes to take an important 1-0 away success at Everton SADP last Wednesday. As a result, they only need to avoid the defeat at home to reach the Copa Libertadores’ group phase. On Sunday, El Pincha succumbed to a 1-0 home defeat to Boca Juniors, that stopped two positive streaks: four competitive games unbeaten (three victories and one draw) and four consecutive victories at Estadio Jorge Luis Hirschi. However, Estudiantes remain as group B leaders in the Copa Liga Profesional, having grabbed 13 points from 18 on offer so far.
Everton SADP ended up empty-handed in the first leg after losing 1-0 to Estudiantes at home last week and now they need to win away in order to keep their hope alive. On Saturday, the side claimed a highly-celebrated 1-0 away success at defending champions Universidad Catolica to climb into fifth place in the Chilean league table (with nine points in six games). Francisco Meneghini’s men broke a four-match winless streak of two draws and two defeats in all competition and also won on the road after nine games (four stalemates and five losses).
Even though Estudiantes will miss a couple of important attacking players, they are solid enough to advance and I expect them to win here like they did last week at Chile.
