Botafogo FR reached the Copa Libertadores’ semi-finals for the second time in history, having beaten Sao Paulo on penalties after a 1-1 away stalemate in the return leg of the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, O Fogao remain at the top of the Brasileirao table on 61 points, one above second-placed SE Palmeiras with eight rounds to go after their 1-1 away draw at Fortaleza EC. In fact, Artur Jorge’s men are on 12 competitive matches unbeaten, winning six and drawing six. At home, Botafogo haven’t lost any of their last eight, with four victories and four draws since losing to Cruzeiro EC 3-0 in July.

CA Penarol showed a great display of effort to secure a scoreless home stalemate against CR Flamengo, making it 1-0 on aggregate to advance to the semi-finals for the first time since 2011. Last Saturday, the team also beat Boston River 2-0 at home to make it three consecutive victories in all competitions, also reaching the top of the Torneo Clausura table on 20 points after nine rounds. Penarol won three of their last four away games, along with one defeat in that spell.

Peñarol should be a tough rival, the way they’ve been this whole tournament when they didn’t even concede a goal against brazilian giants Flamengo. Botafogo are doing great in the brazilian league but they are less experienced in this competition, so while they are obvious candidates to advance, this handicap looks too big.
