Velez vs Banfield

Velez Sarsfield put up a very good fight on their visit to league leaders Boca Juniors last Sunday, but they eventually ended up losing 1-0 after conceding in the second half. It was one more slump in the context of a terrible campaign for El Fortin, who claimed a single victory across their last 17 league games, drawing nine and losing seven in that spell. Therefore, Alexander Medina’s men remain on 16 points in this competition (with one game in hand). Ten of those points were grabbed at Estadio Jose Amalfitani as a product of two victories, four stalemates and three losses. Left back Francisco Ortega and centre back Valentin Gomez have been sent off at Boca Juniors and are suspended for Tuesday.

Banfield continues struggling to overcome their irregularity. Last Saturday, the team had to settle for a 1-1 home draw against Godoy Cruz in a hard-fought game. The team have been winless in their last three league matches, taking a single point in that spell, which means they are now on 26 points in the Liga Profesional. It’s an irregular campaign that left them out of the fight for a Copa Sudamericana ticket in the aggregate table. On a positive note, El Taladro have been decent on the road in this competition, having managed 15 points as a product of four victories, three draws and three defeats.

Both will have important missings but  Velez will play this game less than 48 hours before their big effort at Boca, so Banfield should be able to avoid a defeat against a mixed squad of the hosts.
