Sarmiento vs Estudiantes
Sarmiento finally secured their first victory in the Copa Liga Profesional last Tuesday, when they surprisingly beat Racing Club 1-0 away with Fernando Monetti saving a penalty in the 72nd minute. El Verde made it six points in nine rounds to climb out of the relegation zone in the aggregate table. In fact, the side stopped a ten-match winless streak of four draws and six losses. Sarmiento are without a win in the last nine at Estadio Eva Peron, having drawn five and lost four since beating Boca Juniors 1-0 in August.
Estudiantes wasted the big chance of becoming group B leaders last Wednesday, when they showed their worst version in 2024 and succumbed to an unexpected 2-1 home loss to Platense. That result put an end to their 13-match unbeaten streak of eight victories and five draws and also means Eduardo Dominguez’s men remain sitting in second spot in the group table, accumulating 18 points and trailing leaders Godoy Cruz by one. Estudiantes haven’t lost any of their last six on away turf, winning three and drawing three.
Estudiantes will use an all reserves lineup here because they have a midweek Supercup final against River next, so I’ll give Sarmiento a vote of trust here considering they are coming from a massive win at Racing.
