River Plate vs Rosario Central
After several weeks, River Plate finally returned to their best level on Wednesday night, dominating from start to finish in a convincing 2-0 home victory over Gimnasia LP thanks to goals from Sebastián Driussi and Lucas Martínez Quarta. As a result, El Millonario remain firmly in contention to win another league title after a three-year drought. The side coached by Eduardo Coudet have lost only one of their last four matches in the Torneo Apertura, recording two wins and one draw in regular time during that span, with all four matches played at the Estadio Monumental. There are concerns ahead of Saturday’s semifinal against Rosario Central, however. Gonzalo Montiel, who was a late withdrawal on Wednesday, is set to return.
Rosario Central came through a very difficult test thanks to a goal from Enzo Copetti in the second half of extra time, defeating Racing Club 2-1 at home after playing with a numerical advantage from the 75th minute onward—and with two extra men from the 96th minute. As a result, El Canalla extended their unbeaten run in league play to five matches (four victories and one draw) and remain firmly in contention for another domestic title. The side coached by Jorge Almirón have also been solid on the road throughout the Torneo Apertura, winning four of their eight away matches while also recording two draws and two defeats. Jaminton Campaz will be on the bench after overcoming his muscle injury.
The two biggest candidates to win the championship meet in this semifinal and even though River looked better against Gimnasia, I still think they a lot to improve and Rosario Central should be a very tough rival.
