Platense vs Gimnasia
After their terrible first semester, Platense are now the only and surprising leaders of the Liga Profesional with six points in two matches. Last Sunday, El Calamar won 1-0 away at Velez Sarsfield thanks to a strike from Ivan Gomez in the second half to make it two consecutive successes and continue escaping the relegation places too, which is their main goal this season. Platense won their last home match over Godoy Cruz to stop a five-game winless streak of one draw and four losses at Estadio Ciudad de Vicente Lopez.
Gimnasia LP continue to improve under coach Nestor Gorosito. Last Friday, the team managed an important 2-0 home success over Patronato to make it four points in two games in the Liga Profesional, with Johan Carbonero and Cristian Tarragona scoring. They also extended their unbeaten streak to six league matches (five victories and one draw) to climb into fifth place in the 2022 aggregate table, which will likely deliver a ticket for the 2023 Copa Libertadores. On away turf, El Lobo are on four games without defeat, having won three and drawn one.
This small Platense run will have to end at some point because they are definitely not playing as good as their numbers say, and this tough Gimnasia should be too much for them.
