Newell’s vs San Lorenzo
Newell’s Old Boys managed a valuable point on their visit to group leaders Racing Club last Sunday, when they drew 0-0 away. The team are unbeaten in their last three league matches, with two victories and one stalemate, and remain occupying one of the qualifying spots in group A with 23 points. In addition, Newell’s are on four consecutive victories at their own stadium, having beaten Atletico Tucuman, Platense, Patronato and Banfield in that stretch.
San Lorenzo returned to their usual standards last weekend and ended up losing 2-1 to relegation candidates Patronato at home. El Ciclon continue performing a terrible campaign in the Copa Liga Profesional, having managed 11 points in 12 games after claiming a single win across the last six in this competition (along with three draws and two losses). On a positive note, the team took eight of those points on the road, following two successes, two stalemates and two defeats. Left back Nicolas Fernandez Mercau saw a red card against Patronato and is suspended for Wednesday. Cristian Zapata had to be replaced due to a muscle injury and will miss out, as well as Adam Bareiro and Nestor Ortigoza due to different injuries.
San Lorenzo has been awful this season and the previous one and they will miss some starters, while this solid Newell’s can almost secure a playoff spot with a win, so it’s easy to see what to expect here.
