Newell’s vs Colon
Newell’s Old Boys put up a good fight at league leaders Atletico Tucuman last weekend, but they ended up losing 2-0 away. That result represented their sixth consecutive league game without a win (having lost the last three and drawn the previous three). That negative streak means La Lepra remain on 16 points in the Liga Profesional and continue wasting chances of approaching the Copa Libertadores berths in the aggregate table.
Colon suffered their first defeat under recently-appointed coach Sergio Rondina last Monday, when they surprisingly lost to Independiente 3-0 at home. That result broke their four-match unbeaten streak of two victories and two draws. El Sabalero continue performing quite irregularly in the Liga Profesional, having grabbed 13 points in 11 rounds so far, which places them far away from the fight for the continental tickets. On away turf, Colon managed five points in as many matches in this competition, winning one, drawing two and losing two. Key player Luis Rodriguez succumbed to a muscle injury and will miss out.
Newell’s are not in great form but Colon is even worse. At least the hosts had a good miweek win in Copa Argentina, and I expect them to continue building from there.
