Newell’s – Defensa y Justicia

Newell’s Old Boys are no longer league leaders following their devastating 1-0 away defeat at Rosario Central in a thrilling derby last Thursday. Javier Sanguinetti’s men remain on 16 points in the Liga Profesional, three behind table toppers Argentinos Juniors and Atletico Tucuman. Furthermore, they were also displaced from the Copa Libertadores spots in the aggregate table. It was their first defeat in this competition (after four victories and four draws) and La Lepra are suddenly winless in the last four in league action.

Defensa y Justicia showed great improvements last Wednesday and secured an important 2-1 home victory over Independiente thanks to goals from Manuel Duarte and Adonis Frias. The team celebrated their second victory in nine rounds in the Liga Profesional (along with four draws and three defeats) and accumulated ten points in this competition to continue occupying one of the Copa Sudamericana places in the 2022 aggregate table.

Newell’s looked awful in the city derby a few days ago, while Defensa has looked improved in their midweek win vs Independiente so I think they can take something from this game.
