Lanus – Estudiantes
Lanus failed to secure their ticket to the playoffs last time out, when they showed a poor version and ended up losing 2-0 away at Racing Club. As a result, El Granate saw their three-match unbeaten streak of two victories and one draw in Copa Liga Profesional action coming to an end. Ricardo Zielinski’s men dropped down to the third spot in group B on 23 points and need to win here if they don’t want to depend on other results. At home, El Granate are winless in the last three in this competition, having drawn two and lost one. On Thursday 11, Lanus won 2-1 at home over Peru’s Deportivo Garcilaso in a Copa Sudamericana group game.
Estudiantes showed a great display of effort last Friday, when they secured a massive 1-0 home success over Boca Juniors (completing the round 11 abandoned game) thanks to a strike from Javier Correa. El Pincha made it two consecutive victories in Copa Liga Profesional action to climb into second spot in the group B table on 24 points, which means they just need to avoid the defeat here in order to clinch their ticket to the playoffs. On away turf, Estudiantes lost their last two in domestic action.
A draw might not be enough for Lanus to advance to the playoffs because if two out of three of Racing, Boca and Defensa win, they will be out. For Estudiantes a draw will be enough, but they are in great form and a defeat would very probably eliminate them, so I have to expect an open game here between these two.
