Independiente – Gimnasia
Independiente had to settle for a heartbreaking 3-3 away draw at Velez Sarsfield last time out even though they were leading 3-1 until the 88th minute. Following that disappointing result, El Rojo claimed a single victory in their last five league matches (drawing two and losing two) to make it 23 points in the Liga Profesional’s table, seven behind leaders. They also remain out of the last Copa Libertadores spots in the aggregate table.
Gimnasia LP saw their three-game unbeaten streak of two victories and one draw coming to an end last time out, when the team succumbed to an unlucky 1-0 home defeat to Sarmiento at Estadio Ciudad de La Plata. El Lobo remain on 17 points in the league table after wasting a big opportunity of leapfrogging Sarandi Arsenal in the relegation rankings: as a result, they continue sitting in the 19th spot in the respective table. On away turf, Gimnasia managed only four points from 18 on offer in this tournament (one win, one draw and four defeats).
Independiente might not fight for the championship as it looked like they would a few weeks ago, but they should be still able to beat this poor Gimnasia at home.
