Independiente – Gimnasia

Independiente finally saw their impressive league run coming to an end away at Huracan (one of the best teams in Argentina at the moment), losing 1-0 in a hard-fought MD22 game. That result means El Rojo stopped a 13-match unbeaten streak of five victories and eight stalemates in this competition, which leaves them on 30 points in the Liga Profesional and also is still enough to stay occupying one of the Copa Sudamericana places in the aggregate table. Independiente are without defeat in their last ten at home, winning four and drawing six.

Gimnasia LP took a little breather in the context of a hectic season last time out, when they managed to beat Newell’s Old Boys 1-0 at home thanks to a strike from Rodrigo Castillo in the first half. El Lobo put an end to their eight-game winless streak of six stalemates and two defeats in league action to make it 29 points in the Liga Profesional, seven points behind the last Copa Sudamericana berth in the aggregate table with five rounds to go.

Independiente are fighting to secure a Copa Sudamericana spot and I expect them to continue on their good run (they were unlucky to lose at Huracan last week but had a 13 matches unbeaten streak before that) and beat this poor and irregular Gimnasia that will miss important players in attack like strikers Abaldo and and Briasco.
