Godoy Cruz vs Newell’s
Godoy Cruz succumbed to their first league defeat of the year last Sunday, when coach Daniel Oldra fielded a rotated XI who ended up losing 2-1 against Estudiantes at home. In fact, that result put an end to their nine-match unbeaten streak of six victories and three draws in Copa Liga Profesional action. However, El Tomba remain as group B leaders on 19 points (even holding one game in hand), one above their last opponents who are currently sitting in second. Godoy Cruz secured seven points from 12 on offer at home in domestic action this term (winning two, drawing one and losing one). All regulars are available for Sunday.
Newell’s Old Boys finally returned to winning ways on Thursday, when they secured a hard-fought 1-0 home victory against Tigre (bottom-placed in the aggregate table). That victory means La Lepra stopped their four-match winless streak of one stalemate and three defeats in the Copa Liga Profesional, which also allowed them to return to the playoff zone in group B, accumulating 16 points. Newell’s lost 2-0 to Estudiantes in their last away game after three consecutive victories on the road.
Godoy Cruz was finally able to rest for a whole week after many consecutive games and a disappointing Copa Libertadores elimination, and with all starters back and fit, they should be able to beat this irregular Newell’s that won only one of the last 5 games and it was a tight 1-0 against one of the worst teams in the league.
