Gimnasia vs Independiente
Gimnasia LP fans will have felt devastated after the team’s 2-2 away stalemate at Newell’s Old Boys in a thrilling game last Monday: they had to settle for a draw after taking a 2-0 lead at one point. As a result, El Lobo claimed a single victory across their last six league games, drawing three and losing two. That streak places them in the 17th spot of the Liga Profesional table on 27 points, eight above the relegation spot occupied by Huracan. On a positive note, Gimnasia are on four home matches unbeaten in this competition, having won two and drawn two.
Independiente took a big breather in their struggle to stay in the top flight. Last Sunday, the team secured a vital 1-0 home victory over Huracan in a boring match with Martin Cauteruccio netting the winner in the first half. El Rojo made it two victories across their last three league matches, along with a single defeat in that time. As a result, they are now on 24 points in the Liga Profesional, leading their last rivals (who occupy the relegation place in the aggregate table) by five after 22 matches. On a sorry note, Independiente are without a win in their last ten away matches, having drawn five and lost five since beating Talleres 1-0 in the season opener.
Even if they won’t have striker Cristian Tarragona who is injured, Gimnasia should have enough to win at home against this Independiente that hasn’t won an away game since February when the season started.
