Platense – Estudiantes

Platense played one of their best games this season in round eight, when they secured three massive points by beating Racing Club 2-1 away (thanks to goals from Nicolas Castro and Ronaldo Martinez). El Calamar made it three league matches without defeat (two victories and one draw) to accumulate 11 points in group B, which gives them a big breather regarding relegation: Martin Palermo’s men opened a healthy seven-point gap over the drop spot in the aggregate table, shared by Gimnasia LP, Huracan and Colon at the moment. Platense are unbeaten in their last four at home, winning two and drawing two in that spell.

Estudiantes couldn’t find their best skills in their last league commitment and ended up losing 1-0 at home against Godoy Cruz even though it was a very even match. Therefore, El Pincha continue to perform a poor campaign in the Copa Liga Profesional, accumulating only six points as a product of one victory, three stalemates and four losses. However, they remain into the Copa Sudamericana zone in the aggregate table, holding a three-point gap over the first non-qualifying berth, occupied by Lanus. On away turf, Estudiantes collected four of those points, having won one, drawn one and lost two. Last Friday, Eduardo Dominguez’s men won 2-0 over Huracan in the Copa Argentina quarter-finals. Thinking of Wednesday, centre back Federico Fernandez misses out due to a muscle injury while Mauro Mendez and Zaid Romero are available to return to league action after overcoming their injuries.

Estudiantes are almost in a must win situation, with 6 games left they are 6 points away from the playoffs spots and considering Platense has one of the worst defenses in this tournament, I can imagine an open game with at least a couple of goals.
