Godoy Cruz vs Platense
Godoy Cruz had to wait until the penalty shootout to beat Banfield in the Copa Liga Profesional quarter-finals at Estadio La Pedrera, following a boring scoreless stalemate. As a result, El Tomba are on three matches without a win in this competition in regular time, having drawn two and lost one. After finishing in fifth in the aggregate table, they are now one victory away from a Copa Libertadores’ ticket (considering River Plate and Rosario Central already qualified).
Platense continue to live a dream in the Copa Liga Profesional. After finishing in fourth spot in group B, Martin Palermo’s men celebrated a massive victory on penalties following a 1-1 draw against Huracan, netting the equaliser in the 88th minute. Promoted in 2021, the team are now just two matches away from their first league title despite having claimed a single victory across their last six matches in this competition (along with four stalemates in regular time and one loss).
Platense is a tough team but they are lucky to be here. They scored a very late equalizer and won on the penalties shootout vs Huracan, and while Godoy Cruz has struggled lately I expect them to finally step up and make it to the final that would also give them a spot in Copa Libertadores 2024.
