Colon vs Gimnasia
Colon right back Alberto Espinola found the back of the net in the second half to give his team a massive 1-0 away success at Independiente in the Copa Liga Profesional opener. Besides claiming their first three points in this competition, El Sabalero levelled their last opponents in the aggregate table, and would fight to avoid relegation in a playoff (alongside Huracan) if it was the end of the season. The win also allowed Colon to stop a seven-match winless streak of two stalemates and five losses in league action. Coach Nestor Gorosito would repeat the XI here.
Gimnasia LP fans also know they will be involved in the fight to avoid relegation for the rest of the season. In their debut in the Copa Liga Profesional, El Lobo suffered a devastating 3-0 home defeat to Talleres, which means they are now on eight league matches without a win (drawing five and losing three). That terrible run left them only two points above the relegation line in the aggregate table. On the road, Gimnasia haven’t claimed any victories in their last six in domestic action, with three stalemates and three losses since beating Sarandi Arsenal 1-0 in May.
Colon finally looked alive in last week’s massive win at Independiente, and I expect them to continue on this path of very needed wins when they host the poor Gimnasia.
