Argentinos Jrs – Velez

Argentinos Juniors couldn’t hold onto their lead and succumbed to a devastating 2-1 away defeat to arch-rivals Platense after scoring first. El Bicho continue to produce an irregular campaign, accumulating 22 points in the Liga Profesional after winning only one of their last five in this competition (drawing two and losing two). However, they remain occupying the last Copa Sudamericana berth in the aggregate table. Argentinos remain unbeaten in their last six at home in domestic action, with three victories and three draws since losing to Tigre 2-0 in July.

Velez Sarsfield, who are clearly the best team in the league at the moment, wasted several goalscoring chances last Saturday and had to settle for an unlucky 1-1 home stalemate against Belgrano. However, El Fortin remain as Liga Profesional leaders on 38 points (three above second-placed Huracan) after succumbing to a single defeat across their last 14 matches in this competition (along with ten victories and three draws). Velez won four and drew two of their last seven as the visiting side, just losing to Rosario Central 3-0 in that spell.

Velez are leaders and the big candidates of course to win this league but they should have a tough challenge against this Argentinos Jrs that are usually strong at home where they’ve lost only twice in 22 games this year (one in Copa Sudamericana and one in the league), so I’ll take the hosts with the handicap.
