Gimnasia – Deportivo Riestra

Gimnasia LP couldn’t hold onto their lead and settled for a 1-1 away stalemate at Tigre last Saturday. However, the point is good news for them as the team made it five league matches unbeaten (winning three and drawing two) to accumulate 21 points in the Liga Profesional. As a result, El Lobo remain just four points behind the last Copa Sudamericana berth in the aggregate table. Gimnasia beat Argentinos Juniors 1-0 in their last home match to stop a three-game winless run of one stalemate and two losses at Estadio Juan Carmelo Zerillo. Lucas Castro and Norberto Briasco had to be replaced at Tigre due to different injuries and will miss out on Friday.

Deportivo Riestra have virtually secured their spot in the top flight for next season last Friday, when beating Huracan 1-0 at home thanks to a penalty netted by Jonathan Herrera in the second half. El Malevo made it three league matches unbeaten, winning two and drawing one, to accumulate 22 points in the Liga Profesional, holding onto a nine-point over the relegation spot in the point-average table, occupied by Independiente Rivadavia. On a sorry note, Riestra are on eight away games without a win, with two stalemates and six losses in that time.

Gimnasia has scored in 6 consecutive games but only one on each of them and only conceded two in those. In this game they will miss playmaker Lucas Castro as well as striker Norberto Briasco so their attack won’t be any better. Riestra didn’t concede in the last two so even though their defense is not the strongest, I expect them to play a tight game here that should have very few goals.
