Argentinos Jrs – Gimnasia
Argentinos Juniors couldn’t hold onto their 1-0 lead and succumbed to a frustrating 2-1 away defeat to Independiente last Saturday. Following that result, El Bicho saw their two-match winning streak coming to an end and dropped down from first to fourth spot in the group A table, but still qualifying for the Copa Liga Profesional playoffs on 14 points. Argentinos have been strong at home lately: it’s been five matches unbeaten, winning four and drawing one since losing to Instituto 2-1 in November. While Jonathan Galvan is still recovering from a knee injury, his replacement Francisco Alvarez is suspended after seeing a red card at Independiente. On the other hand, Nicolas Oroz is expected to return after succumbing to a stomach flu shortly before the last game.
Gimnasia LP played one of their worst matches in 2024 last Thursday, succumbing to an unexpected 3-1 home defeat to Instituto. Therefore, El Lobo are now on three league matches without a win, drawing one and losing two in that spell. Leonardo Madelon’s men remain on ten points in eight rounds, running almost out of chances to advance to the playoffs. In fact, Gimnasia also are on two consecutive defeats as the visiting side, having lost to Velez Sarsfield 3-1 and Rosario Central 2-1. Leonardo Morales will miss out injured again. Matias Abaldo and Yonathan Cabral are suspended for Wednesday after being sent off against Instituto.
Argentinos needs to recover from their weekend defeat at Independiente, and will have the chance to do it against this poor Gimnasia that will miss an important midfielder like Leonardo Morales but also Pintado and Cabral in defense, Castro in midfield and Abaldo and Colman in attack, so they should be in trouble.
