Velez – Gimnasia

Velez Sarsfield recently-appointed coach Gustavo Quinteros is finding big trouble in his first games in charge. Last Sunday, the team were thrashed away at River Plate, losing 5-0 after a terrible performance. El Fortin are yet to win in the 2024 Liga Profesional, accumulating a single point in three rounds as a product of one draw and two defeats, which also leaves them in the penultimate spot of the point-average table (only above newcomers Deportivo Riestra). In addition, Velez claimed a single victory across their last four home matches, drawing one and losing two in that spell.

Gimnasia LP continue to show improvements in the first weeks of the season. Last Saturday, they picked up three massive points by beating Independiente 1-0 away thanks to goals from Rodrigo Saravia in the first half. El Lobo made it six points in the Copa Liga Profesional group A. In fact, Leonardo Madelon’s men won three of their last four in league action (losing only once in that spell), including their last two on the road. On Tuesday 6, Gimnasia beat fourth-tier club Centro Espanol 2-1 in the Copa Argentina first round.

After the 0-5 at River Velez has no choice but to try to come back here, otherwise I don’t think they will have the same coach a few days from now. They should take risks, go for the win, and even though I can’t trust them I think we should see at least 2 goals here. Gimnasia has been quite effective in attack with 4 goals in 3 rounds, so we could see an open game.
