Racing – Newell’s
Racing Club wasted a big chance last Saturday, when they had to settle for a 1-1 away stalemate at San Lorenzo after playing against ten men for over 45 minutes. That result means La Academia remain unbeaten in the Copa Liga Profesional and stay as one of the group B leaders on eight points (alongside Newell’s Old Boys). However, despite having lost only one of their last 15 in league action (six victories and eight draws), Fernando Gago’s men are still unable to climb into one of the continental spots in the aggregate table. Racing are without defeat in their last seven at Estadio Presidente Peron in domestic action, having won four and drawn three.
Newell’s Old Boys couldn’t hold onto their lead and ended up registering a disappointing 1-1 home stalemate against Union Santa Fe in an entertaining game. However, La Lepra made it eight points in the Copa Liga Profesional to remain as group B leaders alongside Racing Club. Furthermore, Gabriel Heinze’s men are unbeaten in their last five league matches, winning two and drawing three. Nevertheless, they remain out of the continental places in the aggregate table, trailing Rosario Central (who occupy the last Copa Sudamericana spot) by three points. Newell’s claimed a single victory across their last nine away matches in domestic action, along with four stalemates and four losses.
Every Racing game so far this season had at least 2 goals, Newell’s has scored in all 4 matches, so I expect this trend to continue when the two leaders of Group B meet.
